MORNING WORKSHOPS

Workshop 1: Brexit - how do we need to adapt our food and farming policies?

Summary:

Brexit will mean an end to EU funding of agriculture through the CAP and significant new challenges for farming communities. The end of agri-environment measures is worrying but this could also be an opportunity to think differently about how we manage land and how we value land management. In 2016 the Scottish Green Party manifesto committed to a Food, Farming and Health Act and the SNP have committed to a Good Food Nation Bill in their programme for Government. This workshop will explore the opportunities we have to shape future funding and regulation of farming and food production, and take a systemic approach to the challenges we face.

Objective:

To create a Scottish Green Party Vision for food production and farmed land in a post-Brexit Scotland and identify policy gaps and actions to address them

Facilitator:

Zoe Clelland

Speakers:

Bella Crowe (Nourish Scotland) and Anna Brand (RSPB Scotland)

Workshop 2: Active travel

Summary:

An informal group have been using Greentalk to discuss and update our policy on active travel. The group now has a draft policy which they would like to discuss with a wider audience with a view to improving our active travel policy. The aim of our active travel policy is to make walking and cycling an attractive and viable travel option for the majority of the population and to see a modal shift away from car use and towards public transport and active travel. The aim of this session will be to review the draft policy with a view to having a policy that will achieve these aims.

Objective:

To discuss and get input to a draft active transport policy for autumn conference

Facilitator:

Peter Ryan

Speakers:

Calum Cook and John Chivall

Workshop 3: Peace and Security

Summary:

This workshop will discuss what role can Scotland play in delivering a more just world through action for peace and security. What principles should guide our elected representatives when they engage on issues like international development, diplomacy, security alliances, arms control or the use of armed forces in defence or in peacekeeping.

Objective:

To discuss and agree a set of principles for a policy motion to Conference.

Facilitator:

Iain and Malcolm

AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS

Workshop 4: Refugees

Summary:

This workshop aims to discuss, review and suggest improvements to sgp policy on Refugees and Asylum. With speakers from Scottish Refugee Council, Scottish Detainee Visitors (tbc) and the Syrian community in Scotland, this workshop will give you the chance to input to shaping our policy in this important area.

Objective:

To strengthen and improve policy on Refugees and Asylum

Facilitator:

Gillian Wilson

Speakers:

Graham O'Neil, Scottish Refugee Council and others to be confirmed

Workshop 5: Energy

Summary:

SGP energy policy needs updating to take account of recent developments, and revising to ensure that it is a coherent whole, and dovetails with policy in related areas.. A small group of members have been working on this, and will present a set of draft motions to conference for discussion. The topic of energy has been divided into supply and demand, and the demand side further divided into buildings, transport, and industrial processes. The intention is to submit to conference one main motion on general principles, intended to be non-controversial, and one or more additional motions covering more specific topics. This is to avoid presenting a single complicated motion, likely to get bogged down in discussion of amendments. After initial presentations and discussion of the main motion, the workshop will divide into working groups to discuss more specific motions on aspects of supply and demand.

Objective:

To discuss and get input to a draft energy policy for conference

Facilitator:

Nick Gotts

Speakers:

Susan Brush, Stephen Ferguson, Nick Gotts

Workshop 6: Buses

Summary:

The MSPs have recently commissioned a research report into reforming bus regulation. We will present the findings at the workshop. We will then have a discussion about the key points from the findings in relation to our current bus policy

Objective:

Review the findings of the Bus report with a view to improving our transport policy

Facilitator:

Peter Ryan

Speakers:

Vhairi Tollan

Getting to Napier Uni Craiglochart campus

Cycling and Walking

The City of Edinburgh Council have created cycling and walking maps covering the entire city.  Craiglockhart is covered by the South map.  SPOKES also produce excellent maps highlighting all off road routes, and a great deal more information throughout Edinburgh.  The CycleStreets website can also help you plan your journey by bicycle or foot, with an option to find quieter routes.

There are 81 bicycle spaces at Craiglockhart.  42 covered and 39 uncovered.  Shower and locker facilities for all cyclists, joggers and walkers are available at the [EN]GAGE fitness suite and in rooms 0/39(female) and 0/41(male).  Ask at reception if you can't find any of the rooms.  There is CCTV throughout the site.

Bus, Tram and Train

N.B. If you're travelling by train to Edinburgh you can buy a day saver ticket, valid on buses (and trams) for £3.40 and save 60p on buying one on a bus or at a tram stop in Edinburgh. When you buy their train ticket (from the booking office or train staff), ask for an Edinburgh Plusbus ticket as well as the return. Not all ticket machines offer these. See http://www.plusbus.info/edinburgh for more information.

Use the Traveline Scotland website to help you plan your journey.  Use the My Bus Tracker service (search for EH14 1DJ) to view the next Lothian Buses services around the campus, the closest ones of which are numbers: 4;10;27 and 45.  Craiglockhart is 2.0 miles from the closest Edinburgh Trams stop at Balgreen, integrated bus and tram options are available throughout the city (use the Traveline Scotland website).   Smart phone applications are also available, search for 'Edinburgh Travel' through your app store provider.  Please note that Lothian Buses, except for the Lothian Buses 100 service do not provide change.  All travel, except for Lothian Buses 100, charged at £1.50 for a single, £4.00 for a day ticket.
